The technology changed
Older heat pumps struggled below freezing, and that reputation stuck. Modern cold-climate heat pumps are a different machine. They’re rated to keep producing usable heat at temperatures well below zero, and they do it on the coldest nights the Merrimack Valley throws at them. One system heats all winter and cools all summer — no oil deliveries, no window units.
Why sizing is everything
Here’s where most installations go wrong: the equipment is guessed off square footage instead of calculated. A heat pump that’s too small can’t keep up on the coldest days; one that’s too big short-cycles, wastes energy, and never dehumidifies properly.

What about the really cold snaps?
For most Massachusetts homes, a properly sized cold-climate heat pump handles the entire heating season on its own. In some older, leakier homes we’ll design in a backup heat source for the handful of sub-zero nights — but that’s a deliberate engineering choice, not a default.
